Photodynamic Therapy, PDT: PDT kills bacteria shrinks the oil glands, normalizes the shedding of dead cells with the folicle, improves the skin’s overall texture, and holds promise in the repair of acne scarring.
Treats Persistent and Resistant Acne
Photodynamic therapy (PDT), using Levulan®, treats cystic acne, older acne scars, sun damage, spots, and improves skin texture.
How it Works
PDT is a two-step process. In the first step, Dr. Christian applies Levulan® to the skin, leaving it on for approximately 60 minutes. Levulan® is a clear, painless agent that will enhance the effect of the IPL in the second step. In the second step, Dr. Christian uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) laser to activate the Levulan®. PDT kills the bacteria that trigger acne, exfoliates the skin to unclog pores, and decreases oil production in the sebaceous glands. This can produce long-lasting improvement. PDT is a very safe alternative to Accutane treatment and can even work in patients who have failed Accutane.
What to Expect
PDT causes marked sun sensitivity, so it is important to wear a hat whenever you are outside for a week following treatment and to use medical grade sunscreen every day. Redness and peeling can be expected to last for 3 to 7 days after each treatment. Optimal results are usually seen after 2 to 3 treatments, performed at one-month intervals, however, some patients may need more.
Post Treatment Program
An important part of the treatment program is medical extraction of blackheads and acne pustules, which will expedite the improvement in your skin condition by cleaning the pores of hardened sebum and infected debris. You should schedule a medical extraction, which is part of an Acne facial, 5-10 days following each PDT treatment.
